For millennia, humans masturbated without shame. How did this pastime become a taboo? And how has it since been reclaimed?

Link Rot

Link rot is so very, very real.

I just visited a site that 'archives' articles from 2015. The majority of links no longer works.

What to do? You could archive pages, and link to the archived pages (I've seen many people do this). But how durable is that? Will those archival sites exist still in 10 years time?

I'm used to consulting books that are centuries old. That we're unable now to archive digital stuff for longer than a couple of years is terrifying. #archives #digitalhumanities
Cartel Institute?

This should be interesting to follow:

Cartel InstituteCartel Institute wrote the following post Mon, 04 Dec 2023 03:22:33 -0600
As a new user on Mastodon, we heard it is traditional to post an introductory post where we tell everyone a little about ourselves. So, without further ado, here is our introduction.

Full Name: Cartel Institute
Founded: 1347
Homepage: #^ https://cartel.institute
Status: It's complicated. Pursuing money and power for 687 years.

About:
The Cartel Institute is a pro-statism, pro-corporatism, and anti-capitalism organization designed to help our masters take power over the people. We are against capitalism because we don't want the small players to start businesses; we want them to work for us, either for corporations we own or state-owned enterprises we control. This channel provides advice and commentary about how we, the elite, can take over the world.

Political Views:
Pro-Statism / Pro-Corporatism / Anti-Capitalism / Power by Any Means

Religion:
We Worship the All Mighty Dollar, Euro, Yen, and Yuan

Likes:
Politicians that can easily be influenced or bought, and voters who can easily be manipulated to do things against their own interest. As Stalin called them: "useful idiots." Monopolies, cartels, and state-run enterprises that we control are also favorites.

Dislikes:
We dislike capitalism, since that allows people to start their own businesses. We can't force people to work for us for low wages if we allow capitalism to flourish. Capitalism promotes competition, and we don't like competition. That is why we promote corporatism instead or we encourage state-run enterprises that we can control.

Love/Romance:
We are in love with power. The money is just a reflection of our power.

Tags:
statism, corporatism, greed, politics, syndicate, cartel, money, power

We are proud to be part of the fediverse, and hope to make the world a better place (for us, that is).

Corporatism is loosely defined as large corporations taking control over many aspects of society.

Capitalism is a system where people can start their own businesses, cooperatives, and employee-owned companies for their own economic benefit. Modern capitalist countries have anti-trust laws designed to limit monopolies and cartels.

Crony capitalism is a corruption of capitalism, where corporations have significant influence and control over politics and a country's laws.

And as the Cartel Institute, we can say that we fully support corporatism and crony capitalism, and are squarely against capitalism. It is hard to take over the world if people have economic freedom, and capitalism gives people too much economic freedom. Only us, the elites, should have all of the money and power.

The definitions are right, but I can't like your post because I don't agree with your goals.

“Who would have thought then that billionaires would seek to become the new bosses of American politics?” asked literally not one single person who has paid attention to American politics for the last century

We would have thought of that, since we planned it.
The Sound of One Leg Dancing

societymuse@commonwealthcivics.com
In a desperate search for happiness, a Nepali girl who loses her leg to a fire accident, facing stigma and family rejection, dares to compete in a national dance competition.

Did you notice that the villagers who are all gathered to watch her dance seemed less than enthusiastic? And considering much of the video talked about how the villagers and her parents were ashamed of her and treated her poorly, you have to wonder what their true thoughts were seeing someone make a documentary about her.
chris@biztechtonics.net
I think you are right. Some of it was clearly staged, but even so, their real emotions still seemed to bleed through. A camera crew came to shoot some video, so they gathered the whole village to watch. But the looks on some of their faces said everything. They weren't interested in the dancing, and many even seemed to show contempt at the attention she was getting.
tejan@hubzilla.monster
I wonder if that was the creator's intent. Part of the video was about how people treated her badly, and even though everyone behaved in the video, you could see the contempt some people had for her.

@Illuminatus

Slavery is only 5 generations back for me since my family is full of people who tended to live a long time. And since I knew great grandma rather well it feels like less. She grew up with many adults who were former slaves in her life.

IDK if it's trauma but I do get annoyed when people act like slavery was "so long long ago..."

No. I knew someone who knew slaves. It's not that "long ago"
chris@biztechtonics.net
Perhaps that is why they say it takes 7 generations for change to occur in society.

I am a trade unionist. One thing people assume when you talk to them about unions is that unions and socialism are synonymous. They wouldn’t want to be part of a union because unions, according to them, are anti-establishment. LOL. This is farrrr from the truth. Unions are not inherently socialist. If anything, unions are essentially reformist entities, seeking progress and fair treatment within a capitalist society, not against it.

This does not mean that union work is futile. But union work is not calling for socialism, but rather improving the current capitalist system.

Are there socialists in unions? Yes. But not everyone is.

Why are you part of a union then? Well, first, I am part of a union because I have to perform in this capitalist society. When there are only two choices in life, work my arse off or be homeless, I'd pick the former. But I do not want to be a slave to the system. Being part of a union can significantly heighten worker's awareness of the broader socio-economic dynamics at play in a capitalist system.
Raising Your Voice Against Bullies

Before you silence yourself to keep the peace, ask yourself, “what is the worst thing that can happen if I use my voice?%E2%80%9D_Usually%2C_the_answer_is_%E2%80%9Cthis_person_may_dislike_me_%E2%80%9D_That=#039;s it. The posts says:

Before you silence yourself to keep the peace, ask yourself, "what is the worse thing that can happen if I use my voice?" Usually, the answer is "this person may dislike me." That's it.

If you are silencing yourself for this reason, they already don't like you. They only like a fictional version of you.

Raise your voice.

This sounds like a great sentiment, but unfortunately, in the world we live in, there are a lot of real world consequences to speaking your mind, even when you are standing up for what is right.

We live in a messed up system where racist people say racist things and then claim that the other side is racist. For example, if a person is racist against whites, that is okay, because "whites are evil." In fact, some claim that you can't be racist against whites. But if you call them out on their racism, they call you a racist. How fucked up is that?

Racism is not okay no matter who you are racist against. Hate is not okay regardless of who you hate. Making broad generalizations about people and treating anyone with a similar appearance harshly is not okay.

It should not be an us vs. them thing. It should be about the principle of it.

And if you are labelled a racist, even if that is not true, you could lose your job, your friends, and be ostracized, even though they're the racists, not you.

But I suppose that is their tactics. They are bullies. They want you to fear speaking up, because they threaten to ruin your life if you do not accept their racism and hate.

So, there may be more consequences to speaking up, especially if you have a skin color they do not like (regardless of what skin color that may be).

These double standards need to stop. The hate needs to stop.

And you may need to speak up, even when there are consequences. Just be strategic about it.
